Ah, I adore this family!  I have known Amy for about 6 months now as she was my boudoir client first.  She has since become a dear, dear friend with a golden heart and the family to match!  She spoke so highly of her husband and daughter from the very first time I met her and through other clients she has brought my way (both friends and family), no one has ever had a bad thing to say about them – so to say I was excited to meet them is an understatement!

Our session was actually rained out 3 weeks in a row and then Amy and her daughter Hannah got into a horrible wreck.  They were still willing to go through with the shoot but after rain threatened to ruin it anyway, we decided it was best to wait one more week.  After all, they were black and blue and swollen with bruises and who wants memories of that?

I was not disappointed one bit when I showed up at the barn the day of their shoot.  The shoot took place on her mother in-law’s farm in Winston Salem and the location and weather was perfect.  Her husband was just a studly and sweet and kind as she claimed him to be and her daughter Hannah was soft spoken and so, so beautiful!  Jade drove in from Greensboro to do Amy’s makeup and we all sat in the barn, surrounded by horses, young girls riding everywhere and talked and laughed.   And laughed.  And laughed.  This family loves to laugh and I have to say, laughing is one of my most favorite simple pleasures!

Amy, thank you SO much for introducing me to your amazing family and they were everything and more you had built them up to be.  You guys are such an inspiration to families everywhere and I really had a blast on your shoot!  Even when Devi swore your Jeep was made to go through the woods on a 4 wheeler path and I had to sit on your lap,  bumping heads because of the rocks and potholes – I still had a blast.  I adore yall!

This is how Amy and Devi looked at each other the entire day.  LOVE it!

Hannah asked if she could have her horse, Will, in some of the photos.  I was so excited and of course I LOVED the idea!  Aren’t they beautiful?

Let me start this by saying that I adore Madison.  This was the second time I’ve had the pleasure of doing a shoot with her.  Madison’s friend, Carrie, gifted her with a “just because” shoot 2 years ago for her birthday, when she saw the photos I had taken of her friend Leann’s wedding and mentioned wanting to do a session.  A few months later, Carrie then came to me to have her own shoot.  When Josh proposed to Madison, she came straight to me and told me there was no other option, to tell her my prices and that they were ready to book me.  She also went on to tell her other friend who had just gotten engaged, Allison, about me.  Allison then booked me for her wedding and I posted her engagement photos a month or so ago.  Are you still with me?

All in all, I adore all 4 ladies in this circle whom I have photographed.  I was beyond thrilled when Madison contacted me to shoot her wedding, as she was single when I photographed her 2 years ago and by her looks and personality alone, I knew she would have to score an amazing guy soon – and she did!  Josh compliments Madison so well.  He lets her be herself, he does silly things for her without getting embarrassed.  He looks at her when she talks, and listens.  He asks her opinion and when he’s smart, he takes it.  ;)   He is handsome and funny, lets her dogs kiss him on the mouth (much to her disgust) and I really think they are perfect for each other.

Madison & Josh, I cannot wait to shoot your wedding next year!  Josh, it was so great to meet you and I really think you have an amazing lady on your hands.  I cannot wait to see where your lives together take you and I can only hope I am there to document it for you all along the way.  I really had a lot of fun on this shoot and have to thank Allison for coming along and dog sitting for us.

I don’t even know where to begin with this post.  I have been putting it off for a couple of weeks now just for that reason.

There are people you meet in your life that you just KNOW will make a difference.  Rather it’s short term or long term, it doesn’t really matter at the time.  There are people that put off an energy of sincere concern and desire to learn about you.  To get to know you and that really care about you as a person and a human being.  They look around and open their arms to all walks of life, even those that are nothing like them, and offer them a chance.  A ear to listen, a shoulder to lean on, and they open their home.  A home that is a personal living space, their comfort and solace – they open that to a complete stranger.  Chevara is one of those people.

A couple of months ago, I was looking for a venue for which to shoot a bridal shoot.  The weather was calling for rain and then it quickly switched to snow.  I called location after location down town Winston and was turned away or calls were not returned.  Then, 2 days before my shoot, I received a call from Chevara.  She lives in the Leaf Loft Apartments in down town Winston and was wanting me to come visit to see if her home would work for my shoot.  I took her up on her offer, met her that afternoon, and was blown away by not only her beautiful home (which was perfect!), but her energy and warmth.  She welcomed me with a huge, tight hug and a smile that lit up the room.  She was full of energy, asked lots of questions about my photography and told me her house was open for me to shoot in any time I would like.

Later that night, I Googled Chevara, just out of curiosity.  What I read on various websites blew me away and gave me so much encouragement and inspiration. She has her own art gallery called White Space, and began the first transgender panel at Winston-Salem State University, helped found their first gay-straight alliance for students, as well as fights for women’s rights.  She is a member on the boards for the Winston-Salem Symphony, Partnership for a Drug-Free NC, Twin City Stage, Citizen Police Review Board, and RiverRun International Film Festival.  I am sure I have not listed a handful of other things she takes part in, but I think you get a small glimpse at the amazing woman I had the pleasure to meet and work with.  As quoted from another site (because I couldn’t say it better myself), Chevara is “5-foot powerhouse in 4 inch heels.”

Since Chevara was so kind and willing to open her home to me, I wanted to give her a shoot of her own to thank her for her kindness.  These are just a few of my favorites from our day together.  Chevara, thank you for everything, from the bottom of my heart.  You are a ray of sunshine in my life and I think of you often.  You give me hope, encouragement and inspiration and believed in me from the moment you met me.  I cannot wait to see how we can help each other out along our paths in life.

Chevara mentioned that she loved the photos I did of Sterling with her name, Crawly.  Sterling was kind enough to bring him to Chevara’s shoot for us to use! :)

Last week I got quite the email that made me chuckle.  It was from a lovely young lady explaining that she was turning 30 and would love to have a personalized lifestyle/anytime shoot with me.  She exclaimed that she wanted to get this shoot done before she got any older and fatter.  It wasn’t until the second email that I found out she was actually coming over from the United Kingdom!  She was coming to North Carolina to visit with her parents for her birthday, then flying to New York at the end of the week and then back home to the UK.

We met up Wednesday afternoon in down town Winston Salem.  She was, by no means, as old or “fat” as she had mentioned.  She was an absolute delight and just as silly and fun to be around as her emails made her out to be.  We chatted just like we were old friends and I had a lot of fun hanging out with her on our shoot.  My dear friend Sterling came along to assist and it was like we were all playing dress-up and laughing as little girls.  This is just one of the many reasons I love what I do.  Not to mention being able to meet and connect with people from all around the world.

The sun is setting fast here in the evenings, so I was so excited that she was accommodating enough to meet back up Thursday evening to do the second part of our shoot before she headed up to New York.  After the shoot, I met her mother whom was just as lovely.  What an amazing family – so down to earth and fun.

Happy Birthday, Marie.  You are beyond beautiful and full of life for 30 years young.  Thank you so much for contacting me and giving me so much of your time while you were visiting NC.  These photos can only reflect so much of the amazing person you are, so classy and a beautiful soul – but I hope I did them justice.

This was seriously the first photo I took of Marie.  How classy does she look?!

Yummy evening sunlight.

She called this her “Va-Va-Voom Dress”.  I think it’s the perfect name.

These were taken the following evening in a more classy gown.  I loved the purple!

Does she not look like she’s right out of a fairytale?

I love it when a client will trust me as the photographer, even when they feel silly.  I love these next two captures.  I feel like it really shows the spirit of the lovely woman I got to know for just two short days.

Last week, I had the pleasure of shooting my friend and fellow photographer, Heather Smith’s maternity session. This shoot marked her 33rd week carrying her and her husband’s baby girl.  She is an artist herself, so we wanted to play that up, with fun poses and offbeat maternity photos.

Heather has been a source of inspiration for a few years now. Her quiet nature, positive spirit and attitude radiate all around her. She is a creative soul that glows greatness from the inside out. We have worked together quite a few times, and I never underestimate what we can make happen by the end of our shoots. She’s up for anything, we collaborate our ideas and the end result is usually better than either of us expected.

“This would be totally awkward and wrong, if I wasn’t pregnant”, she said.  We stepped out onto the front porch of an old carriage maker’s house in down town Winston Salem, and she was wearing nothing but a bathing suit, shirt and heels.  It was rush hour, people were driving by and we had to laugh.

Heather, Congratulations again to you and Bryan, and thank you so much for letting me have the opportunity to capture this special time for you. I cannot wait to meet her, and I just know you’re going to be the best parents ever!

I love Heather’s sense of style and great collection of cool hats!
