Let me start this by saying that I adore Madison.  This was the second time I’ve had the pleasure of doing a shoot with her.  Madison’s friend, Carrie, gifted her with a “just because” shoot 2 years ago for her birthday, when she saw the photos I had taken of her friend Leann’s wedding and mentioned wanting to do a session.  A few months later, Carrie then came to me to have her own shoot.  When Josh proposed to Madison, she came straight to me and told me there was no other option, to tell her my prices and that they were ready to book me.  She also went on to tell her other friend who had just gotten engaged, Allison, about me.  Allison then booked me for her wedding and I posted her engagement photos a month or so ago.  Are you still with me?

All in all, I adore all 4 ladies in this circle whom I have photographed.  I was beyond thrilled when Madison contacted me to shoot her wedding, as she was single when I photographed her 2 years ago and by her looks and personality alone, I knew she would have to score an amazing guy soon – and she did!  Josh compliments Madison so well.  He lets her be herself, he does silly things for her without getting embarrassed.  He looks at her when she talks, and listens.  He asks her opinion and when he’s smart, he takes it.  ;)   He is handsome and funny, lets her dogs kiss him on the mouth (much to her disgust) and I really think they are perfect for each other.

Madison & Josh, I cannot wait to shoot your wedding next year!  Josh, it was so great to meet you and I really think you have an amazing lady on your hands.  I cannot wait to see where your lives together take you and I can only hope I am there to document it for you all along the way.  I really had a lot of fun on this shoot and have to thank Allison for coming along and dog sitting for us.

Last week, we lost our dearly loved and loyal friend, Scooby.  He has been a great dog and companion for 10+ years and the sudden loss and sadness seemed to spread from human to canine across the farm.  Skittles seems lost and sad – like every time we return home we’ll magically bring Scooby back with us.  She was in clear mourning and it’s not like you can sit a dog down and have a talk with them about death and them fully understand.  Don’t believe I didn’t try.

Scooby “belonged” to my little brother.  He was Cody’s first dog and was beyond loyal and protective from day one.  Cody was also grieving and it was clear the search had to begin to find a new companion.  No dog will ever replace Scooby, but there are thousands out there needing loving and forever homes, and we were looking to give one just that.

Little did we know, we would give TWO just that.  I have always rescued animals – never purchasing from a breeder or pet store.  I’ve never cared much about “pure bred” or blood lines.  Actually, the best dogs we’ve ever had have been mutts – mixes of who knows what.  I did have a few criteria, though.  Because we live on a farm off the road, the dogs have free roam of outside with no scare of them being hit by a car.  However, in recent years, we have noticed a very scary jump in the coyote population.  I knew we needed a dog that was medium to large size to ward off the coyotes and that had long fur to stand the cold winters in North Carolina.  They also had to be great with children and other dogs.  I looked at the local animal shelter’s websites for a few days and didn’t see anything that I felt would be a good fit.  I finally casually listed on facebook that I was searching for a new dog and within a few minutes, I had a response from a childhood friend.  She and her husband have a new baby (well, he’s 1) and along with a new baby and changes in jobs, they were looking to rehome 2 of their dogs.  They are English Springer Spaniels, mother and son.  They preferred to have them stay together and after they answered a few questions about how they are with children and dogs, they brought them to the house to meet Cody and Skittles.

Almost a week later, I think it’s safe to say that Jake and Libby have found their new forever home.  They are the perfect size, their coats are long and thick (naturally, though they are trimmed right now) and they adore everyone!  Though still obviously grieving, Skittles adores them and gives a little more of her attention to them every day.  Cody spends hours after school playing with them outside and they seem to fit in perfectly! The weather is beyond beautiful today, so I took my camera out and shot some photos of them playing and lounging around in the yard.

Meet Jake (front) and Libby (back).

Libby, breathing in the nice autumn air.

This photo makes me laugh.  Jake (head on) has Libby’s bone and she’s not too happy about it and I think he knows he’s caught.

Libby.  It’s tough work being a dog.

Handsome Jake.

I love this shot of Skittles.

Pretty girl.

Libby with her toy.

Rolling around in the sunshine.

This shot was a mistake, but it reminds me of my boudoir shots, where I crop off the models face to make it look a little more mysterious.

As I mentioned in my last post, I think it’s incredibly important for artist to take time to themselves and regurgitate the images from their imaginations to reality.  This is a shoot where I did just that last weekend.  With great help from my lovely friends, Kari and Sterling, I was able to bring this vision to life.  I didn’t have all of the details worked out in my mind, but I knew what direction I wanted to go in.  They helped greatly with clothing and props and did a great job giving me the vision I had.

We shot at my house and of course Skittles had to make her cameo.  Good thing she fit right into the theme.

I have to admit that one of the biggest compliments to someone running their own business is return and devoted clients.  Be it a coffee shop, book store, hair stylist, or photographer.  This was Carla’s 3rd shoot with me and this time, she brought along a very special man in her life.  This was my first time meeting Octavio and I could tell he was smitten with her after spending 5 minutes with them.  When he smiled at her, his whole face lit up.  He held her close, laughed at her silly jokes and best of all – let her be herself.  Carla is very funny and I LOVE that about her, and apparently, so does Octavio.

I do have to say, I have never had a couple take my “OK, now kiss…” suggestion quite as seriously as these two.  When I asked them to kiss, oh, they kissed.  I kind of felt like I shouldn’t have been in their moment, much less photographing it.  After all was said and done, though, I was honored to be there and see this man make Carla so happy and comfortable.  She has become a close friend after having first being a client that found me online and I adore her so much.   I adore how genuine she is when inquiring about her friends’ days and lives.  I love how she can throw a curse word into a great conversation and go on like nothing happened all while being very lady like.

Carla is a foster mom to lots of otherwise unfortunate dogs and Octavio is more than supportive of her.  She has a heart of gold when it comes to animals and dogs and I have no doubt this is one reason we get along so well.  She brought all five of her dogs (personally owned, a few who were fosters to begin with) to the shoot and while it was a bit chaotic and we didn’t know what to expect, I had a great time. Carla, thank you so much for trusting me once again and enlisting me to document this time in your life.  It makes my heart so happy to see you happy and in love and I wish you guys nothing but much luck and love for the future.  Octavio, it was a pleasure to meet you, and you have one amazing woman on your hands but I know you know how blessed you are – as is Carla.  You are a total sweetheart and I cannot wait to get to know you better as Carla and I continue forward with our friendship.

I think it’s very important for artist to take personal time and exercise their imaginations whenever they can.  To keep inspirations pinned up on our walls or filed away within arms reach.  To look at them often and stretch our brains.  To let our imaginations roam free and get it out, much like writers or musicians do.  It’s not very different for photographers and I think it’s important to take a little time to ourselves and bring our imaginations to life, which we often can’t do as much on client shoots.  With personal shoots, it’s OK to slow down, make a mistake or two and learn as you go.

I did just that this past weekend.  In a storm of emails, editing, client meetings, shooting, working, ordering client products and life, I took a moment for myself.  I gathered some props, called a few friends over and we played dress-up into an entirely different fantasy land.  I took a moment and let my imagination come to life and I am thrilled with the results.  This is just a sneak peek of what’s to come, but I cannot stress enough how GOOD it felt to get this out of my head and into action.
