Ashley first contacted me a couple of months ago to set up a portrait session for her family.  Her email couldn’t have been any more perfect.  She told me it would be herself, her husband, their son, and their dog.  She already had a location picked out and she knew she wanted an album and DVD of images.  Sounds perfect, right?

Then she told me – she’s a photographer, too!  This completely changed the game.  Or, so it did in my mind.

As a photographer, I know I see things the average client won’t see in their photos.  Shadows bother me that they never saw to begin with.  Lighting has to be perfect and a stray hair can ruin an image.  I constantly have to remind myself – I am my own worst critic and they are going to LOVE their photos and not give the exposure, depth of field and shadows a second thought.  When you’re shooting for another photographer, though?  All of that goes out the window.

Ashley and I corresponded through email for a few days and then came the question of what I suggested she wear.  She then wrote “…let’s go shopping!”  I knew I liked her by her first email, but now?  I think I’ve found a new best friend!  We met up at Forever 21 the next week and I loved her right away.  She was beautiful, genuine, funny and had amazing style.  We took loads of clothes into the fitting room and passed them back and forth over the wall.  Yes, this meant I bought new stuff, too.  :)

This past Tuesday, we met at the mall again for Ashley to have her makeup done.  (This is included in every package I offer, now with a few different MUA’s around the area).  Ashley knew Sarah, Sarah remembered Ashley, Sarah did a perfect job on her makeup and we both walked out with new purchases, again.  By the way – Benefit Cosmetics ROCKS!

When we arrived in Archdale, at our location, Ashley said “I can’t wait to see what you write on your blog about us…”  I was nervous, so I replied with “Let’s see if we can get some shots, first…”  I was afraid I sounded rude, but I had to reassure her that I was there to give her what she came to me for – and because I’m sure I was WAY more nervous than she admitted to being.

Ashley’s family is so perfect and beautiful.  They are a family of faith, values and impeccable talent.  They are kind and patient and I could have shot with them all day, had I not have run out of suckers for Canon.  I cannot thank them enough for trusting me to capture their family in the light they capture themselves – pure and beautiful.  Since Ashley contacted me, we have become great friends.  We shoot together, teach each other, share and learn from our mistakes and support each other.  I am so grateful for that perfect email she sent, and even more grateful that she just happened to be another photographer.

How perfect was this setting she chose and how adorable are they?!

Real.  Beauty.

Autumn is my favorite time of year and it’s so great to smell it in the air and know it’s right around the corner.  Here’s to a beautiful and crisp Fall, with the lovely & inspiring Dawn.  I took these photos months ago when Dawn came to the makeup studio for headshots.  This was only my second time meeting her, but she is such a kind and calm spirit to be around.  Funny, sincere and beautiful – what more could you ask for?

What’s your favorite season, and why?

You may remember Casie and Richard from their super cute bridal photos earlier this year.  In case you need a reminder:

Yeah, that beautiful couple – remember? Well, Casie had a little bun just beginning to bake in her oven and just a week and a half ago, beautiful baby Bridgett came into this world. They are just smitten with her and so in love, already. I went over to meet her today and take her newborn photos and she was SO tiny and precious. She was having a bit of a fussy day, understandably so after only a week of feeling and smelling and seeing new things. Back tomorrow for round 2! This little princess needed a break today to rest, so part two of this post will follow soon. Until then, here are a few of our favorite shots so far. Welcome baby Bridgett Rogers to the world!

Not only is BBQ a huge part of the south, but an even bigger part of North Carolina.  Everyone from North Carolina knows there are two kinds of BBQ.  You have a sweet, tomato based BBQ and a dry, vinegar BBQ.  Out of at least 5 BBQ restaurants in Winston Salem, Don’s BBQ is the only one to serve the sweet tomato based BBQ, which is my absolute favorite.

Don’s BBQ isn’t just any BBQ cafe, though.  It has been a staple on this side of town as well as my family for as long as I remember.  It only makes sense though, since my dad’s brother, Don, owns and works there.  Don’s has been the center of so many memories and lessons for not only my whole family, but for me personally.  It’s where my mother, while working as a waitress over 25 years ago, met my father.  It’s where I sat with my father while the booths on the other side of the cafe filled with Hell’s Angels and he taught me that they are human, too, and they are great men.  The only place that is filled half with local Sheriff deputies and half with leather clad Hell’s Angels, and everyone knows, respects and likes everyone in the same room.  It’s where my father and I would meet every Tuesday morning for breakfast before I went in to work.  I also worked there for a summer, as many members of our family have over the years, or still do.  It’s where we have held our family Christmas parties for years past.  It’s the first place I ever drank tea and still makes my favorite tea, ever.

Don’s holds so much history and so many great memories for me, and this September, Don is retiring and closing the doors for the last time.  It has been a long 40 years, but well deserved time off is in the near future.  The word has gotten around town, and when I spent my morning there today, Don told me how busy last Saturday got, people pouring in an hour after closing.  For 40 years, they have perfected a menu and been offered thousands for it’s recipes.  They have had local meats delivered twice weekly, Don himself cutting pork shoulders and shredding their famous BBQ with his own hands for 40 years.  His son, Chris working beside him, as well as his wife, Doris.

I showed up this morning before they opened, to take photos for the family to have and to document this time in his life, as well as my history.  Don was cutting up the BBQ while in a dish beside him sat fresh tomatoes from his own garden.  Their loyal waitress of 4 years coming in behind me, getting things ready for the day while Don shared stories of the restaurant and family.   He offered me a glass of tea and a bowl of BBQ and it was a morning I will never forget.  Don reminds me a lot of my father, his brother, and we talked about him often.  A few hours later, when it was time to go, I really was excited for what the future holds for them.  Sure, I’m a little sad and it is a time in my life to only be remembered now through stories and photographs, but I really hope these photos remind them of the amazing things they have done to the community – the amazing memories everyone has made there.

I have known Leslie for a few years now and this was actually the second time I’ve had the pleasure of photographing her.  Leslie is such a strong and inspirational friend and it is always a pleasure to spend time with her.  So down to earth, warm and friendly and an awesome belly dancer!  She lives in a loft apartment down town that has an amazing open floor plan and clean lines, yet feels like home as soon as you walk in.  The balcony has the best views and I think it really compliments her personality. I had a great time on this shoot, just photographing her in her own domain, relaxed and simple.  She was up for anything and had the most fun wardrobe to look through and piece together practical but sexy outfits!

Leslie, thank you for welcoming me into your home and letting me photograph you.  You are so stunning and I think these photos really showcase that.  :)

My great friend Sterling assisted me on this shoot and afterward, Leslie was sweet enough to take us out to brunch at the amazing Sweet Potatoes, all while donning this awesome outfit!
