Yesterday, I promise to buckle down, do some work and things that NEEDED to get done.  Sure, it was a Saturday, and I had originally planned to have a few girls over for dinner, but I really needed to work.  I woke up early with a headache and too much on my to-do list, so I called off all plans and got to work.  First, to mow the lawn.  Mind you, since we live on 48 acres (shared with my Mom and little brother in a separate house), there’s a lot of lawn.  As I made my first round, I happened to look down right ahead of me and there it was.  Head barely above the height of the grass, a bright yellow beak.  A baby bird!  We looked all over for it’s nest, pretty sure the wind had swept it away the night before.  With no nest to be found, we perched it in the middle of a tree and I finished my mowing.  The Mom was flying overhead, landing in the tree above the baby and squawking to let us know – she’s got this.  Leave her baby alone!

So yesterday evening I decided to check on it.  Make sure it was still there, and alive.  With the birdie nowhere to be found anywhere around the tree, I found him (I’m not sure it’s a him, but to me, it is) half way down the yard, in the middle of a patch of bright sun light.  Crying.  It’s Mom now in a tree a bit closer.  I called my little brother out, told him to go digging for worms and we’d try to feed it.  Much to my surprise, it ate from us!  But!  In the midst of looking for worms, my brother turns over a patch of grass and finds…a nest of baby bunnies.  *palm face*.  I have stuff to get done!  I don’t have time to feed babies and worry about keeping them safe and away from the dogs!  I don’t want to be reliable if they don’t make it!  I wish I never would have found them and now I can’t stop worrying about them.  Spring is in full bloom and I am a huge animal lover – but nature makes me nervous.  I know nothing about birds and bunnies and the last thing I want to do is mess up the natural flow of how they work and have them be neglected and die because of me.  The pressure!

We left the nest of bunnies and will not be going back to them, as to trace the dogs their way.  This morning, Skittles had the baby bird in her mouth.  He wasn’t dead or even hurt, as though she was now taking her turn to take care of him.  Only, that’s not allowed.  She’s a dog and her instinct will have the bird for dinner.  So now?  Now this baby bird is in a cat carrier on the front porch being fed worms every hour.  I did get some work done that I needed to get done, but not without my mind wandering and going outside every hour or so to check on a baby bird.  I know in the end, whatever happens to it is up to mother nature, but now I feel slightly responsible, and this?  This is why I don’t have children.

I’m sure you’ll recognize most of the faces in these photos.  They are faces of previous clients, that have all become very good friends.  A group of ladies including doctors, lawyers, teachers, architects and designers.  Some mothers, some child free.  A group of ladies from all walks of life, all going through different stages in life and all coming together to comfort each other and laugh.

Heather invited us all over to her new pad to enjoy an evening of  YUMMY potluck vegetarian dishes, laughing and even a little hula-hooping!  I cannot begin to explain the feeling of spending time with people whom once trusted me (and still do!) with a business aspect of their life, and then invited me to share their lives with them more personally.  These group of women are extraordinary and while I was once a young, insecure and socially anxious (OK, so that part is still there) girl, I never imaged finding new friends.  Once my friends from high school all went their own ways, got married, had kids, moved away – life shifted.  I now know it’s all OK because I have been blessed with some of the most amazing people I’ve ever met from all walks of life, and all because of doing something I love.

I recently purchased the new Fujifilm Instax Mini 7s.  No, I’m not switching to film like it seems everyone is doing these days.  I got it for moments like last night – to take snapshots and enjoy them with everyone, right away.  I am LOVING this little camera and cannot wait to use it on future shoots just to capture small and personal moments instantly.

Such beautiful women.

Heather and I trying our luck at hula-hooping.  It’s actually a big work out, but super fun.  You can barely see Amy in the back, but she takes lessons and taught us a few neat tricks!

As I’ve gotten older and ventured out on my own, I have started to become more of my own person.  I’ve always been a little “different”, being artistic and curious by nature.  I have learned along the way to never judge a book by it’s cover, for you never know someone based on their outside appearances.  I’m sure no one that meets me in person guesses that I adore old country and folk music and that I am a total tomboy.

I am taking this stance more than ever since I made a batch of cookies this afternoon.  What do they two have to do with each other, you ask?  Well, these cookies are beyond delicious, but they just…don’t look like cookies.  I’m not sure what I did wrong (perhaps because I was out of baking soda or maybe because I didn’t have parchment paper and put them on a baking sheet), but they just look a little, bad.  All looks aside, though – they are one of the best cookies I’ve ever tasted.  I made a home-made orange zest icing for them and am taking them along to a girl’s night potluck tomorrow evening.  The best part?  I know my friends will try them, despite how they look.  I know they will shrug it off and take a chance, because they KNOW what’s in them and they trust that I wouldn’t bring anything gross to a potluck.  :)

A few people have asked for the recipe, so here it is!

Sweet Potato Cookies

Ingredients

Cookies:

  • 1 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 stick butter, room temperature
  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tablespoon molasses
  • 1/2 teaspoon butter-flavored extract
  • 1 1/2 cups peeled and finely grated sweet potato
  • 2 teaspoons orange extract

Cream Cheese Icing:

  • 8 ounces cream cheese, room temperature
  • 2 cups confectioners’ sugar
  • 1 stick unsalted butter, room temperature
  • 1 tablespoon orange extract

Directions

Preheat oven to 400 degrees F.

For the cookies: In a medium mixing bowl, sift together the flour, nutmeg, baking powder, baking soda, and salt, and set aside. Whisk together, with an electric mixer, the butter and sugar. Add the egg, molasses,  sweet potato and orange extract. Fold dry ingredients into sweet-potato mixture.   Drop spoonfuls of dough onto parchment-lined cookie sheet. Bake for 12 to 15 minutes or until golden brown. Transfer to a wire rack to cool. Decorate with cream cheese icing.

For the cream cheese icing: In a large mixing bowl, using an electric mixer, blend cream cheese, sugar, and butter on low speed until incorporated. Increase the speed to high, and mix until light and fluffy, about 5 minutes. Add theorange extract, and mix on high speed until incorporated. Smear on icing and enjoy!

This was my first visit to Cherry Grove, South Carolina and my first time to the beach in over 5 years.  I grew up going to the beach every year or at least every other year, but as I got older, it was up to ME to go.  With life and money and jobs now in order, it wasn’t as easy to get up and go every Summer as I once thought.

Andy and I also enjoyed our first vacation together when we joined our friends at the beach for Thomas and Melina’s wedding.  We had an amazing 4 story house and lounged around for a week.  It was pure bliss, and these are just a few of the photos I took during our week long stay.

Cindy is a stylist at my salon. From the first day I saw her, I’ve wanted to photograph her. Does that sound creepy? Maybe, but look at her! She’s very sweet and easy to talk to, and beautiful to boot. I was beyond excited when she hired me to photograph her maternity photos. I’ve known for months that she was pregnant, and may have sent her a message along the way showing interest in photographing her maternity session. I secretly wished from the beginning that she would hire me to do so.  Cindy only has a few weeks left and is very excited, along with her husband, to welcome their little boy into the world. This shoot was really fun and we had a beautiful place to shoot thanks to a connection my MUA made with one of her clients. The photos are a surprise for the father-to-be for Father’s Day and I cannot wait to hear what he thinks.

For now, let me know what YOU think! Isn’t she just radiant?

Cindy, thank you for hiring me to photograph this personal time in your life – you were a complete doll and I just know your gentleness and patience will carry over into motherhood to make you an amazing mother. I cannot wait to meet your little man!

Simple, yet stunning.

Workin’ it!

There were fresh roses EVERYWHERE and the yard smelled divine!

Personally, prom was never a big deal for me.  I went to my Senior prom and left about an hour later.  It was way over-rated, but perhaps that had to do more with the hardships that my senior year had brought my way.

At any rate, I think it could be lots of fun.  A chance to get dressed up with your closest friends, have a good dinner, dance and be silly.  The group of friends featured in this post did just that.  What I love most about them was the obvious difference in them as people.  Different backgrounds, skin colors, religions – yet, all so accepting of each other.  They are a group of great kids and Katie, whom is an aspiring photographer (and very good, might I add!) asked me to photograph them last weekend before their dinner reservations.  We only had a little under an hour, and it was my first time shooting a prom setting, but I had a blast!  Thank you for trusting me with your cool photos, Katie and friends – and I hope you enjoyed them and your prom alike!
